Foundation Seeks Caring Canines for Calendar
Vol XXXIX, Jul '09
The AMDA Foundation has received numerous photos and stories of adorable dogs and cute canines whose work at long term care facilities is a labor of love. However, we still are accepting submissions to be considered for inclusion in an 18-month calendar to benefit the Foundation and long term care research. The lucky dogs can be canines that physicians or other practitioners own and take to their facility on a regular basis, resident canines who live at the facility, or residents’ dogs who are popular members of their community.

Study Suggests Link between Pets and Infections
Vol XXXIX, Jul '09
A study from the University of Guelph in Canada involving 26 pet therapy dog-handler teams, 14 of which visited long-term care facilities, suggested that dogs can carry infectious diseases on their paws and fur. Before each visit documented in the study, the dogs’ forepaws and the handlers’ hands were tested for MRSA, Vancomycin-resistant
enterococci
and
C. difficile
. The investigator also sanitized her hands, handled each dog, and then tested her hands for the same pathogens. All dogs were observed during the visits, including all interactions with staff and residents. Then the investigator repeated all tests as the dogs left the facilities.

We sat down with Dr. Gillespie, and she shared her thoughts about the Futures Program, research, and long term care medicine

Study Shows CMD Contributes to NF Quality
Vol XXXIX, Jul '09

The data also identifies other factors, including facility size, not-for-profit status, and higher registered nurse (RN) hours per patient day—as impacting quality care at facilities. The study appears in the July issue of the
Journal of the American Medical Directors Association
(JAMDA).

Sponsor a Student through State Chapters
Vol XXXIX, Jul '09
AMDA state chapters can make sure that young physicians in their communities have opportunities to learn about long term care medicine and pursue their career interests in this field. The Colorado Medical Directors Association has done this with great success. Last year, the group paid for a fellow to participate in the Futures Program. “As a junior fellow, he wasn’t eligible to receive a Futures scholarship from the Foundation, so we paid for him to participate,” says chapter President Cari Levy, MD, CMD. She adds, “We devote a certain amount of money every year for this purpose.”

HHS Sends Advance Directives Report to Congress
Vol XXXIX, Jul '09
The Secretary of HHS sent a comprehensive report to Congress early this month entitled “Advance Directives and Advance Care Planning.” The report, requested by Congress in 2006, focuses on (1) the best ways to promote the use of advance directives and advance care planning among competent adults as a way to specify their wishes about end-of-life care; and (2) addressing the needs of persons with disabilities with respect to advance directives.
