The AMDA Foundation offers a new opportunity for practitioners and their teams to present to a national audience their best practices and programs that improve quality of life for nursing facility residents. Quality Improvement & Health Outcome Award recipients will receive a coveted spot on the AMDA Long Term Care Medicine—2012 program schedule and present their findings to medical directors and physicians from across the country and internationally. Award winners will be spotlighted in future AMDA publications and join our esteemed list of QI Program Award recipients on our website where the LTC community can review their QI program for the benefit of all.

Billing and coding issues present some of the greatest challenges for young physicians. As AMDA Past President Charles Crecelius MD, MPh, CMD, said, “Continuing education in billing and coding is important to understand how to appropriately document and code your visits, obtain deserved optimal reimbursement, and protect yourself from audits.” At the same time, with reimbursement tight and cost cutting a priority in all areas of health care, accurate billing and coding has never been more important.

How are you different than your older physician colleagues? According to a 2008 report from the Association of American Medical Colleges, young physicians have as a priority a greater balance of home and work and a better quality of life. They also make career choices based more wanting to make a difference, and they choose job locations based on proximity to family and friends and less on compensation. According to several Futures Program alumni interviewed for a Caring for the Ages (www.caringfortheages.com) article about young physicians, many are finding fulfillment and happiness in long term care.

Futures Alum Shares His Story in New AMDA Column PDF Print E-mail

Congratulations to Dr. Greg Gatchell, a Futures alum who is featured in the premiere “Reflections” column in the summer issue of AMDA Reports, the association’s member newsletter. In the column, which is designed to share stories of how AMDA has helped shaped young careers, Dr. Gatchell talks about his grandparents and how his close relationship with them inspired him to pursue geriatrics. He also recalls his experiences as a poster presenter at Long Term Care Medicine—2011 in Tampa.
