The family of a patient who received exceptional care at the hands of AMDA member Peter Jaggard, MD, recently made a generous donation to the AMDA Foundation in his honor. "Dr. Jaggard was good and kind. From the first moment, he was accessible and understanding," said Michael Smolens, son of Rose Smolens, who was Jaggard's patient for the 15 months she resided in the Presbyterian Homes in Evanston, IL. "We were amazed at the time Dr. Jaggard dedicated to talking with us about our mother's care," Smolens noted, adding, "He did a brilliant job of managing her care."

Visit the wall in the New Orleans Convention Center during the AMDA meeting--March 17-20--and help build the future of the Foundation and the many research projects it supports.

Update on LTC Quality Improvement Partnership PDF Print E-mail

Efforts to study the implementation and use of AMDA clinical practice guidelines as part of an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) grant are moving forward. Facilities in Pennsylvania have completed their data collection and currently are working through the process of implementing their assigned CPG. Initial feedback suggests that the facilities have experienced few problems with guideline implementation. However, Marcia Yesko, the state nurse coordinator in Pennsylvania, will be monitoring progress carefully in the coming months.

AHRQ: Boomers Create Greater Research Urgency PDF Print E-mail

The "graying" of the baby boomers is making current research needs on diseases of aging even "more dramatic and urgent," according to Irene Fraser, PhD, Director of AHRQ's Center for Organization and Delivery Studies. "Boomers will drive research on issues related to quality of life, satisfaction with care, compliance, and so on," she added. She noted that a trend toward more studies in these areas already is beginning.
