The AMDA Foundation continues to make progress in generalizing research findings and developing useful tools for long term care researchers. These advances were on display at the AMDA Foundation Long Term Care Research Network's 4th Annual Conference. In addition to the presentation of study results, the group discussed ways to address key issues such as informed consent.

One important aspect of the Research Network annual meeting was the opportunity for participants to discuss via small workgroups Network studies in progress or proposed for development. These discussions were aimed at sharpening the focus of these studies, enhancing their methodology, and ensuring that results can be translated into practice in a way that improves care.

Conference '04: How Physicians Influence End-of-Life Care PDF Print E-mail

Research Network members heard the results of several Foundation-sponsored studies at their annual conference. One study addressed "Assessing Physician Practices That Influence End-of-Life Care in the Nursing Home." Researcher Janet M. Lieto, DO, CMD, found that physicians were actively involved in end-of-life planning and that they generally felt that their patients experienced a "good death."

"Informed consent is more than a piece of paper; it is a process," said Samantha Beavers, Lead Reviewer for Duke University's Clinical Trials Quality Assurance Department, at the Health Care Compliance Association's 2004 Research Compliance Conference. "The individual subjects must be in control of the informed consent process," she added.
