Vol XXVIII, Oct `06
At their meetings and in other venues, Research Network members frequently have discussed the unique ethical issues and human protection challenges that long term care researchers face. To help clarify these issues, Larry Lawhorne, MD, and Peter Vasilenko, PhD, are in the final stages of preparing "Research Involving Older Adults: A Tutorial on Human Subject Research Issues." This tutorial is designed to address challenges and raise issues to consider when submitting IRB applications for research involving older adults.

The tutorial will address the challenges and issues relating to the fact that this is a vulnerable patient population that has a possible diminished capacity to consent and decreased functional status. This PowerPoint program also addresses the issues related to diminished capacity to consent and considerations about determining decisional capacity. The program also discusses when a legally authorized representative (LAR) is necessary to give consent for a subject to enroll in a study and how researchers should work with this individual.

Also included in the tutorial are:

  • Sample proxy consent policy
  • Risks involving a needy population to the IRB and researchers
  • Issues relating to genetic research
  • Issues relating to end-of-life research

The final tutorial is expected to be available sometime later this year. Watch this newsletter and the AMDA Foundation Web site for updates.
