Vol XXIV, May `06 "As a maturing Research Network, we need the national visibility we deserve. Toward that end, I want to make sure we continue putting our best foot forward," Karuza observed. He explained that the Network is looking at several federal initiatives to get funding for projects. For example, he noted, "We are looking to develop a research partnership to examine physician practices in the nursing home using innovative barcode reader technology. We also will jump on other research proposals as we get them, and we will be staying true to the grassroots philosophy that is the cornerstone of our Research Network." Karuza praised Lawhorne's leadership and accomplishments, stating, "Dr. Lawhorne made many valuable contributions to the Network; and his efforts and vision were instrumental in the tremendous progress this group has made in a short time. He will be missed, but we wish him luck." The Search Committee will be holding regular conference calls to proceed with finding a permanent director for the Research Network. Karuza stressed that the group will spend whatever time it takes to find the best person for the job. In the meantime, "My goal is to provide stability while a thoughtful but rigorous search is conducted," he observed. Under Karuza's leadership, the Research Network's future looks strong. "We're well on the way to planning our fall conference in Tampa, Florida. There will be the usual high quality programs, plus new opportunities to discuss key issues and network with researchers and practitioners from around the country," he said. At the same time, Karuza will be keeping ongoing projects--such as the development of guidelines on informed consent and a centralized database--on track. "I don't just see myself as a just a caretaker," Karuza concluded. "I will be actively involved in moving our Network forward and continuing to build on the foundation we have established. Ultimately, I want the new director to be able to benefit from the increased momentum I create with the guidance and help of our committed and energetic members and excellent staff." |
