Vol XXIII, April `06 Ewigman discussed opportunities the Research Network provides for hands-on involvement in research-even for novices. "Not only do you get intellectual stimulation," he said, "but you have opportunities to participate in developing research questions, publishing reviews, and conducting patient research." Long term care research is important, Ewigman stressed, partly because it contributes to quality care. He noted that over the years, research has proven popular experience to be wrong. He offered the examples of restraint use, safety and effectiveness of Hormone Replacement Therapy, and the utility of lipid lowering therapy. "Experience is great," Ewigman said. However, "it can lead to physicians making the same mistakes for years." He added, "Experience is what you rely on when there is no good evidence." Of course, Ewigman explained, often "there is no good evidence for many common practices or ways of thinking. Some of what we do is probably harmful, and there might be evidence out there of a better way." This, he noted, is why groups such as the Research Network-and the involvement of practicing physicians-are essential. "The Research Network is planning to bring health care into the 21st century," concluded Ewigman, adding, "As a long term care provider, you'll want to go along for the ride." |
