Vol XIX, November `05 One woman has just finished a beautiful miniature statute of singer Billie Holiday that she made for the auction, said Jenna Kipp, Assistant Director of Therapeutic Recreation at Levindale. "Several residents have created pieces expressly for fundraising events such as this. Like everyone doing volunteer work, they enjoy the pleasure of giving back to the community and society at large," noted Kipp. One resident is contributing a piece that is more representative of his past than his present. As Kipp explained, "This gentleman heard about the AMDA Foundation auction and had his daughter ship some works from his private art collection." He is donating several pieces of pottery that he first purchased nearly 50 years ago. In addition to the works of nursing home residents, the art auction will include paintings and other art by various celebrities. To date, the Foundation has received a contribution from radio and television personality Shadoe Stevens. Other celebrities--including Tony Bennett, Sally Struthers, and Barbara Carrera--have been invited to contribute. AMDA's own Jeffrey Levine, MD a well-known photographer whose compassionate portrayal of the elderly has won him widespread acclaim, will be donating some of his works to the auction. They are pleased and honored to help contribute to the future of long term care research, said AMDA Foundation Executive Director Gwendolyn Maddox. With drug plans for the Medicare prescription drug benefit using research studies and data from the literature to make formulary decisions, research involving the long term care population has never been more important. The money we raise at the auction will help facilitate these essential activities, she added. Watch future issues of this newsletter and the AMDA Foundation Web site for updates and more information about the art auction. |
