The Foundation's second annual "Art of Caring, Works of HeART" Art Auction brought together 200 AMDA members and guests with 90-plus auction items, many of them works of art by nursing home residents and other elderly individuals. The auction raised $39,000 to benefit Foundation programs and research initiatives. The highest bid for one item--$3,200--went for a print called "Art 4Art's Sake" by Rhonda Ostrow, a senior artist in Maryland.

Other pieces that generated excitement and competitive bidding included a signed lithograph by famed artist Salvador Dali and photographs by AMDA members Jeffrey Levine, MD, CMD and Mario Cornacchionne, DO, CMD. Each of these physicians generously donated three of their photos. Dr. Levine's photos have appeared on the cover of JAMDA.

"This was a great event. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of donors, who included AMDA members and staff, as well as several nursing facilities," said Foundation Chair Jonathan Musher, MD, CMD. He added, "AMDA members showed their support for long term care research by coming out in full force to participate in this event."

In addition to the works of art, the auction featured hotel packages, registration to the 2008 AMDA Annual Symposium, a set of AMDA clinical practice guidelines, jewelry, and bottles of wine and wine accessories.

The AMDA Foundation extends its thanks to Evercare, Merck, and Johnson & Johnson Health Care Companies for their generous sponsorship of this event.
