Participation by the Research Network in a national research database hasgreat potential to broaden members’ access to information and research, Peter Vasilenko, PhD, told researchers. However, he noted, there are many issues to be ironed out before such a database can be utilized effectively.

A national database would enable:
  • Collection of standardized data from many places
  • Large sample sizes
  • Access to data by investigators
  • Performance of important research projects
  • Long term data archives
  • Basis for multi-site grants

To help control data dissemination, Vasilenko offered, “I propose a Research Committee that sets rules about who can access the data and then controls that access.” In addition to maintaining administrative control over the database, this committee also develops policies and procedures.

It also will be important to have an effective database manager, he added, explaining, “This person maintains the database, physically controls the data flow, and monitors confidentiality concerns.” He emphasized the need for limited access to the data, a secure location that also ensures adequate protection, and maintaining IRB approval for the database.

The benefits of a centralized database include:

  • Systematic collection and centralization of data
  • Control of research via the Research Committee
  • Provision of access to investigators
  • Ability to develop a significant data archives over time
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality (for subjects, providers, and institutions)
  • Maximizes human subject protection

“This system will involve a little work, but I think that it ultimately will be worth the effort,” Vasilenko noted. “Centralization makes matters easier in terms of research and human subject protection.”
