Vol II, Dec `02
The AMDA Foundation has received a 4-year grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a Public Health Service agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services, to support the formation of national- and state-based Long Term Care Quality Improvement Partnerships. The Foundation will collaborate with state Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) and national long term care provider organizations to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of AMDA evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) toolkits in long term care facilities.

In addition to funding the development of the Long Term Care Partnerships and clinical practice learning materials, the AHRQ grant will support the AMDA Foundation in:
  • Providing toolkit implementation training onsite at 50 nursing facilities in the United States;
  • Evaluating the impact of CPG implementation against publicly reported nursing home quality measures;
  • Determining model approaches to CPG implementation based on facility size, location, ownership, staffing, and case-mix; and
  • Disseminating the model approaches both online and in print.
National organizations to be included in the project will be AMDA, the AMDA Foundation's Long Term Care Research Network, the American Health Quality Association, which represents all national healthcare Quality Improvement Organizations, national nursing home trade organizations, and representatives from key national long term care professional associations. The national representatives will hold their first meeting, January 16, 2003 in Columbia, Maryland. In addition to the Partnership award, AHRQ granted the Foundation's Long Term Care Research Network $20,000 to support its 2nd Annual Conference. The monies were provided through AHRQ's Small Conference Grant Program, an initiative that seeks to partner with outside agencies whose works "complement and promote AHRQ's core research." The Foundation Conference, "Patient Safety Issues in Long Term Care," was held November 2-3, 2002 at the Hotel Adolphus in Dallas, TX and fatured leaders in LTC research, as well as experts in patient safety and nursing home quality initiatives. New areas of study were identified at the conference, including the physician attitudes regarding diabetes management; B-12 deficiency screening and treatment; practices affecting quality of end of life care; and impact of provider visit frequency on the quality of nursing home care.
