Vol XVII, May `06
Nursing home residents' pain can be reliably detected and effectively treated. Although recognizing and treating pain in this setting presents special challenges, a systematic effort can overcome barriers and be successful.
AMDA's Pain Management CPG and Pain Management Companion CPG help nursing homes assess their care practices and incorporate evidence-based practices into their care delivery systems--and improve care.

Using a framework that is, in general, directed towards the entire interdisciplinary care team, the CPGs provide:
  • Information about current practices that, if followed, will help to ensure that pain among long-term care patients is adequately recognized, assessed, treated, and monitored; and
  • Discussion of many issues that are not found in the nursing home regulations.
