Like pressure ulcer prevention, a facility's success at controlling pain in their residents is an important indicator of quality of care.

By applying the CPGs' key care principles, homes should be better able to meet their residents' pain management needs. That, in turn, will help ensure that they provide high-quality care and satisfy related regulations.

The prevalence of pain is one of the quality measures publicly reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as part of the Nursing Home Quality Initiative: www.medicare.gov/nhcompare.

Healthcare providers, consumers, and advocates can view nursing homes' pain management scores at the above URL.
