Vol XIV, Feb `06 Ms. Blume and Mr. Barragan's conversation follows: Ms. Blume: [Richland Hills has] entered baseline data and won't have to collect data until the 9-month period. What did you think of the baseline data report? How did you use the information? Was it surprising? Helpful? Mr. Barragan: [It was] very helpful. The information has been relayed to the nursing department and other employees dealing with residents--to help us [find out] if our residents are not being cared for. Our care plan [team] is also reviewing pressure ulcer care and pain management with the families. [Families'] input is crucial. Ms. Blume: How would you improve the data collection process? Mr. Barragan: I would like to ask our medical director and colleagues to be involved with our collection process by properly documenting on pressure ulcers, skin care, pain, etc. Our staff development coordinator is also actively involved on collection data gathering. Ms. Blume: And have you begun implementation of the pressure ulcer CPG? Mr. Barragan: Absolutely. I feel that basic implementation was the key to a successful event. Every resident is important and every bit of help, helps! Initially [implementation] was a challenge because our nursing department was used to doing things "their way." I in-serviced my nursing department and the DON was very supportive. Ms. Blume: How is it going? Mr. Barragan: We continue to monitor [our progress using the study materials]. We added preventive measures as a care plan… We have seen positive results and our pressure ulcers numbers reduced significantly. Ms. Blume: This is fantastic, thanks for sharing your information. I'm glad to hear that everything is going so well. Do you have any last thoughts you'd like to share? Mr. Barragan: I hope that our results within the 9-month data collection period show an improvement. We certainly hope so, too. |
