Now that recruitment has ended and training is nearly complete in all six states, participating nursing homes are engaged in data collection and CPG implementation:

Baseline Data Collection

After training, nursing homes immediately begin baseline data collection using the LTC-QI Partnership's data collection website: www.nhqi-chartdata.org. (To preview the site, log in using username: 104, password: 104.)

Using the website, nursing homes abstract data directly into the data collection forms for pain and pressure ulcers. They then view real-time data feedback reports for their arm of the study (pain management or pressure ulcer prevention). These reports show each home's process measure scores as compared to aggregate scores for their state.

While participants are randomized to receive clinical practice guideline (CPG) implementation training in either pain management or pressure ulcer prevention, they collect data for both clinical topics. This way, each arm of the study serves as a control for the other arm.

CPG Implementation

After baseline data collection, each nursing home begins implementing its assigned CPG. State nurse coordinators mentor homes throughout the process, providing guidance and answering any questions that arise.

Follow-up Data Collection

Facilities concentrate on CPG implementation for several months before returning to data collection two more times, at months nine and 15.
  • The first follow-up data collection period, at month nine, coincides with the end of the active intervention.
  • The second, at month 15, follows six months later and is intended to measure sustainability.
Project Evaluation

Nursing homes' participation in the project ends with the third data collection period, at month 15. With data collection complete, data analysis will begin.

We will share the results of our analyses, lessons learned, and any modifications of the CPG implementation tool kits with you—our National Quality Coalition members—and others interested in long-term care research.
