Vol XXIV, Dec `06
This month’s issue focuses on news from the AMDA Foundation. The LTC-QI Partnership is an important part of the Foundation’s focus—but only one piece of the Foundation’s extensive work in long-term care. Current funding and educational opportunities are described below.

2007 Quality Improvement Awards

The AMDA Foundation continues to partner with Pfizer on the Quality Improvement Awards Program, now in its sixth year. The Awards, $10,000-$15,000 each, support initiatives that focus on:
  • Facility staff education
  • Quality improvement programs
  • Research on interventions and treatment
  • Health literacy to directly enhance the quality of care provided to long-term care residents
My interest in the AMDA Foundation QI awards has been fairly longstanding. I am interested in long-term care education and feel that the nursing home is a site that often is neglected in medical education and research.

Julie Gammack, MD
Quality Improvement Awards Winner

The deadline for the general quality improvement awards has passed—but the Foundation is still accepting proposals for these five therapeutic areas:
  1. Pain management in palliative care
  2. Dementia
  3. Hypertension
  4. Hyperlipidemia
  5. Urinary Incontinence
The deadline for therapeutic proposals is now January 12, 2007.

The program encourages innovative projects to help make a distinct impact on the quality of long-term care. Awards cover salary support, consultant fees, materials, and travel to the AMDA Annual Symposium. 2007 Futures Program

The AMDA Foundation is pleased to announce the return of the 2007 AMDA Foundation Futures Program. Held during the AMDA Annual Symposium, this intensive learning experience is designed to expose residents and fellows to career opportunities available in long-term care. Participants receive the following benefits:
  • Admission to the AMDA Futures Program on March 29, 2007
  • Registration to the AMDA Annual Symposium, March 29-April 1, 2007 in Hollywood, Florida
  • Transportation to and from the meeting in accordance with AMDA travel policies
  • Four nights' lodging, March 28-April 1, 2007
  • AMDA membership for one year, starting on the date of the annual symposium
It’s not too late to apply, but interested applicants need to apply soon; the deadline is December 15, 2006. Applicants must complete a brief application and attach a curriculum vitae (CV) and letter of interest. A letter of support from the program director or another AMDA member is also required.

The AMDA Foundation is seeking donations for its second annual "Works of HeART" Art Auction, to be held during AMDA’s 2007 Annual Symposium in Hollywood, FL, next March.

Last year's Art Auction—which featured donated works of art from researchers and residents alike—raised over $30,000 for longterm care research. Last year's participants are enjoying their purchases and many are looking forward to finding new treasures in March.

Do you know nursing home residents who are artists? Consider asking them to donate paintings, drawings, sculptures, pottery, or other items to the 2007 Art Auction. Last year’s contributors were thrilled to hear that their contributions helped a worthy cause—and that their paintings and other items would grace offices and homes nationwide.
