Vol XXXIV, Apr '08
The AMDA Foundation conducted a study in 2007 to determine the impact of the Futures Program on its attendees and to assess where they are in their career choice and whether they still felt that the program was valuable.  Survey results showed that:
  • 81% of respondents are current members of AMDA.
  • 78% work in long term care and 80% work full time.
  • More than half (53%) of respondents responded that the Futures program greatly affected their decision to enter long term care, 22% said that it had some effect.
  • 100% of the respondents responded that the program is valuable to residents and fellows.
The enthusiasm and passion respondents expressed about long term care and the Futures Program is consistent with what the Foundation has heard from program participants over the years. As Cari Levy, MD, CMD, a Futures alumna, explained, “I was able to learn through the Futures Program that there are many different ways to be involved with long term care. I was inspired by the presenters and sought an assistant medical directorship as a mentorship path to becoming a medical director.” She added, “The most important lesson I took home was that nursing home practice can be innovative and that AMDA is the most effective venue to learn about all the possibilities.”

Steven Handler, MD, CMD, another Futures alum, said, “The Futures Program drastically changed my career path by allowing me the opportunity to see the tremendous clinical, research, and administrative potential that the long term care setting can provide.” Particularly, the Research Network member learned that “nursing homes are terrific places to conduct research.”
