Lifescan Study Gets Under Way PDF Print E-mail

The AMDA Foundation has undertaken a new study designed to determine if using a blood glucose monitoring system (Lifescan System) can produce better glycemic control among nursing facility residents with type 2 diabetes. According to Foundation senior research project coordinator Joe Tkacz, “We will have nurses use the system to monitor blood glucose to see if we can get residents off of sliding scale insulin.”

The study’s principle investigator is Meenakshi Patel, MD, FACP, CMD a long-time Research Network member and experienced researcher. Enrollment for the study has begun. The recruitment goal for this study is to have 200 subjects in 3-5 facilities.

“The study has tremendous potential impact on nursing facility practice and quality of life for residents. Hyperglycemia impairs cognition and can contribute to worsening dementia, impaired vision, and other problems. If we can learn to improve glycemic control, it will improve diabetes management—which is a win-win for residents and staff alike,” says Tkacz.
