Better Glycemic Control in the Long-Term Care Facility PDF Print E-mail
The purpose of this study is to improve glucose control in diabetics on sliding scale insulin. This study tests the hypothesis that utilization of a blood glucose monitoring system with a data link system, strong nursing coordination, and targeted medical director intervention will result in better glycemic control for residents with Type 2 diabetes. Specifically, we will identify residents diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes on sliding scale insulin to see if monitoring with data collection, blood glucose graphing, and a prompt to the attending physicians by a medical director (co-investigators) can improve overall glucose control and decrease the unnecessary use of sliding scale insulin. Our enrollment goal is 200 patients, and the study will take approximately one year to complete.

Investigator Duties

Investigator should be a medical director. An interest and/or expertise in diabetes care would be a plus. This project is currently ready for subject enrollment, and is expected to take one year. Project specific duties may include:
  • Supervise AMDA Foundation Project Coordinator who is responsible for providing oversight for the study as well as managing day-to-day operations. The project coordinator also serves as the primary contact for investigative facilities. Coordinator should report to the PI on a weekly basis to report on study related matters
  • Receive and review weekly updates for patients in the intervention group
  • Recruit patients on sliding scale to study
  • Communicate weekly study results to the attending physicians
  • Once a study participant meets criteria to be removed from sliding scale, provide recommendation for basil/bolus insulin regime (based on standard guidelines provided) to the attending physician
  • Assist in the statistical analysis and interpretation and clinical significance of findings
  • Present and publish study results as lead authors or contribute to scholarly articles as a co-author
