Use of the Rivastigmine (Exelon®) Patch in Assisted Living and Long-Term Care Facilities PDF Print E-mail
The purpose of this study is to determine whether patch therapy is a staff preferred delivery method over other forms of Cholinesterase Inhibitor Therapy for dementia patients. This study will test the hypothesis that the Rivastigmine patch is preferred over other forms of cholinesterase inhibitor therapy in assisted living and long term care facilities. Facilities currently prescribing the Rivastigmine patch will be selected from a database. The dispensing and direct care-giving staff of patients receiving the patch will be recruited and asked to complete a medication preference survey. Our enrollment goal is 800 subjects (400 dispensers/400 direct care-givers/CNAs), and the study will take approximately one year to complete.

Investigator Duties

The investigator should be a medical director or an attending physician in the long term care setting. An interest and/or expertise in Alzheimer’s disease would be a plus. Project specific duties may include:
  • Supervise AMDA Foundation Project Coordinator who is responsible for providing oversight for the study as well as managing day-to-day operations. The project coordinator also serves as the primary contact for investigative facilities. Coordinator should report to the PI on a weekly basis to report on study related matters
  • Act as liaison for purposes of facility selection
  • Assist in the statistical analysis and interpretation and clinically relevant findings
  • Present and publish study results as lead authors or contribute to scholarly articles as a co-author
