Care and Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) in the Long Term Care Facility PDF Print E-mail
The purpose of this study is to improve VTE care and prevention in the long term care facility. This study tests the hypothesis that hospital service areas (HSA) Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) VTE measures correlate with VTE prophylaxis guideline adherence in the nursing homes receiving their patients. It also tests whether improved performance occurs in the nursing home after implementation and training of the VTE Clinical Practice Guideline. Guidelines for proper VTE prevention will be developed and aid in the creation of a VTE prevention survey. The survey will be used to determine the proportion of residents receiving VTE prevention among highest and lowest quartile performers on the SCIP VTE measure. A VTE Care and Prevention tool-kit and CPG guideline education program will be developed and tested against a control group in a pre/post study design among low quartile performing nursing homes on the VTE measures. After data review, the VTE care and prevention guidelines will be implemented throughout the long-term care community. In total, 500 charts will be reviewed for this study, and the study will take approximately eight months to complete.

Investigator Duties

The investigator should be a medical director or an attending physician in the long term care setting. An interest and/or expertise in Venous Thromboembolism would be a plus. Project specific duties would include:
  • Supervise AMDA Foundation Project Coordinator who is responsible for providing oversight for the study as well as managing day-to-day operations. The project coordinator also serves as the primary contact for investigative facilities. Coordinator should report to the PI on a weekly basis to report on study related matters
  • Assist in developing guidelines for VTE prevention by reviewing draft materials and providing feedback
  • Develop a standard admitting orders sheet for VTE prophylaxis
  • Assist in developing the VTE data collection tool by serving on a 3-person committee to review and approve it
  • Assist in facility recruitment and chart surveys within facilities
  • Oversee/assist in the development of VTE CPG toolkit and educational program
  • Assist in education program implementation
  • Assist in the statistical analysis and interpretation and clinical significance of findings
  • Present and publish study results as lead authors or contribute to scholarly articles as a co-author
