Thank you to everyone who was so welcoming at the Annual Symposium in Charlotte. With only five days on the job as the new AMDA Foundation Executive Director, I was delighted to have such a wonderful opportunity to be immersed in the spirit of the long term care practitioner community.


The programming was impressive. It was rewarding to see that the Foundation was such a prominent part of educational activities, from our cornerstone Futures Program to the inspiring stories behind the AMDA Foundation/Pfizer Quality Improvement Awards and the AMDA Foundation/Evercare® Award for Improving the Quality of Life for Persons Living in Nursing Homes. It was clear that the Foundation has much to offer AMDA members and their teams, and I look forward to continuing these important traditions.

I was inspired by the many donations and tributes to the Wall of Caring, and it was rewarding to see the interaction of people visiting the Foundation booth and witness the hard work of our staff. The AMDA community is clearly rooted in friendship, collaborations, mentorships, and sharing of ideas, successes, and problem-solving.

The Art at the Wall not only raised money for our research efforts, but it also was moving for everyone to see the works of seniors like Barbara Shank, facility residents such as the folks from the Rowan Community (who produced the beautiful mural), and Eric Mohn, the recently deceased quadriplegic painter.

This issue of the Foundation e-News provides a closer look at the AMDA Foundation activities in Charlotte. We hope it inspires you to be part of the Foundation in 2009.
