Vol XL, Oct '09 Specifically used as part of the facility’s award-winning palliative care program, the room is a place where residents and families can go to talk, share private time together, and even enjoy a live performance by a professional harpist. Now the award touches the lives of many people every week. The Foundation is currently accepting applications for the 2010 AMDA Foundation/Evercare® Awards, with a November 6, 2009 deadline. The awards are based on programs—such as Potomac Valley’s palliative care initiative—that facilities have implemented and demonstrated to improve the quality of life for their residents. Three $10,000 awards are presented; at least one is given specifically for improved advance care planning and/or palliative care programs. Each awardee will present his or her award-winning program at a session during Long Term Care Medicine—2010, AMDA’s annual symposium, in Long Beach, CA, next March. All nursing facilities, profit and non-profit alike, are eligible for this honor. “Winning this award has allowed us to establish partnerships at the local and regional level and given us greater status in the long term care community for our unique contribution to promoting palliative care,” says Potomac Valley’s Annie Durkin. She adds, “Winning the award was an important national acknowledgement.” All applications must be submitted electronically.
