An article entitled, “Mentoring: A Key Strategy to Prepare the Next Generation of Physicians to Care for an Aging America,” in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society cited the unique role of professional associations in extending the institution-based mentoring programs of medical schools and training programs.

The AMDA Foundation Futures Program is highlighted as a platform for new physicians to view organizations like AMDA “as a source of career support and provides an environment from which informal personal mentoring relationships can more easily develop.” The passion of the paper’s first author, Heidi K. White, MD, CMD, is well known to the AMDA community, serving as co-chair of the Futures Committee and as a member of the Board of Representatives of the State Presidents Council. The paper underscores the role of the mentor as “a balancing act between support and challenge. Ultimately, mentors provide vision, helping mentees see where they have been and where they are going.
