Tom & Jerry, Heartland Care & Rehab Center

Heartland is a 102 skilled bed facility located in Cape Girardeau, MO. For several years the facility had two pugs dogs, named Rex and Ralph. In 2007 the pugs had to be put down. It was very upsetting to the staff and residents.

A campaign was started to raise money to find a new dog for the facility. Residents, families and staff worked making name tags holders and key chains in order to raise the funds. They also held a facility car wash and cook-out and over $200 were donated.

By September, 2007 a pair of pugs ready to be weaned was found in a nearby town. We knew they were the perfect pair for us! We asked the residents to name the new puppies and Tom and Jerry were chosen.

Most of our residents are under the age of 60 years old. Leaving their homes, families and pets was hard and having Tom and Jerry made the transition into Heartland a lot easier. One resident left behind several dogs before moving to Heartland, and she has "adopted" Tom and Jerry as her dogs. She checks on them day and night to make sure they are fed, watered and requests that they be brought in when it is too hot or too cold outdoors. She is in a wheelchair and cannot attend to them as she would like, but she has a big smile when she rolls down the hall with one or both of them on her lap.

Tom and Jerry are a pleasure to have at Heartland Care & Rehab Center!
