Valentine, Good Samaritan Society Comforcare

For many elderly residents in a long term care facility, having a pet as a companion is not uncommon.

Valentine, Good Samaritan Society Comforcare

Here at Good Samaritan Society Comforcare, like many other skilled nursing facilities, we find that the residents who have an opportunity to interact with animals seem to enjoy their quality of life and have a general sense of well-being. Having a companion such as Valentine seems to be calming for residents and reduces their loneliness and isolation. During the daily interaction with our residents, they are more apt to participate in activities involving animals, be more attentive and more importantly have physical and emotional contact. Valentine brings a smile to our resident’s faces. She allows the residents to hold conversations while turning her head as though she is intently listening to them. In her eagerness to please the residents it is a wonder she has not doubled in size from all the treats she is given. Valentine is comfortable with all our residents, as she freely visits from room to room, often staying and playing with the residents and their guests. Although not typically a barker, when fearful situation arises, Valentine will bark as an indication of changes for the staff.
