When Elant at Newburgh started thinking about a canine companion for our residents a committee was formed to make a plan. The residents and the staff were excited to share the facility with a furry friend.
![]() Lola, Elant at Newburgh One of the maintenance men found a dog a couple of states away who would be perfect for the facility. The dog was a yellow lab, 4 years old named Lola. Lola had a heart defect and had been given up. She had completed canine good citizens test and had the right personality for therapy dog work. When Lola came she would be living with a physical therapy assistant and come in to work each day with him. Lola was introduced to the facility a couple of days a week until she got used to her new friends. Two years later Lola is a member of the rehab team and a good friend to residents, family members and staff. Lola encourages residents to work on balance as they walk her in the halls. Residents who are nervous to come to rehab light up when Lola comes to get them for rehab. Lola can be seen trotting through the halls carrying a favorite toy in her mouth. Residents with word finding problems break out in spontaneous sentences when they see Lola. New residents feel a little more at ease when they are welcomed by Lola. She makes such a difference when she comes in each day. Submitted by: Heidi Williams, CTRS Director of Recreation Elant at Newburgh Newburgh, NY |
