Tanner, Dimondale Nursing Care Center

Tanner, a rescued two year old Labrador/Retriever mix, is a very affectionate dog. He is loved by the residents, families, volunteers, and staff at Dimondale Nursing Care Center in rural Dimondale, Michigan. Whether visiting an activity or making room visits with his owner and Director of Nursing, Lisa Chudzinski-Walter, Tanner gives and adores receiving a bundle of affection! No matter what physical or emotional state a person may be in, his unabashed approach brings joy to all encounters.

In our long term care and rehabilitation facility, Tanner offers the opportunity for our population to have someone to care for, to exercise with n therapy, to play with, to love, to relieve happy memories of pets in their past, to provide social interaction, companionship, opportunities to express and show affection and decrease stress levels.

Tanner first came to our facility as an eight week old puppy from the “Last Chance Rescue” in Howell, Michigan, of which the Director of Nursing is a active member. She recognized the opportunity with his wonderful temperament and affectionate nature for Tanner to be a beneficial addition to the LTC setting. Dementia, Hospice, rehab, and seriously ill residents have all found special joys in daily encounters with Tanner. One resident formed a very special attachment as her beloved pet looked exactly like Tanner. She and her family enjoyed frequent visits that became daily as her life came to an end. At her funeral, her family said the only thing missing at her service was Tanner.

In conclusion, we salute your efforts to promote canine companions in long term care. We are truly honored to have Tanner with us and hope to share his story with others through your organization.
