Ralphie, a four year old Shiz Tsu, is named for the famous fashion designer, Ralph Lauren. His name fits him as he dons a fashionable "doggy bib" on Thursdays to make his visitation rounds in the Health Care Center of the Good Samaritan Village in Denton, Texas. This charming therapy dog also brings smiles to the Independent Living Residents, as well as, the residents of the Assisted Living Center.
![]() Ralphie, Good Samaritan Society Denton Village Ralphie earned his status of therapy dog after completing a basic obedience course and then continuing his education with a course given by the American Kennel Club which emphasized situations he would encounter in long term care facilities--such as noises, canes, wheelchairs, walkers, carts and different types of residents. Ralphie's typical work sessions begin with assisting in group therapy. He makes his way around the group as each resident has the opportunity to hold him, pet him or just look into his understanding eyes. Many residents love to hold him and rock him like a baby (he only weighs 10 pounds!) Another favorite activity is to run their fingers through his soft, long tail! Often, residents who don't speak to humans, will tell Ralphie "secrets" because they know Ralphie won't tell anyone else! The staff at good Samaritan also benefit from Ralphie's visits. His happiness lets them realize a brief period of relief. Often the staff and families of residents bring him treats! Ralphie can also add "star" to his resume. He was the subject of a documentary about therapy dogs in long term care facilities. He loves his work with the residents and all his friends at Good Samaritan Village! Ralphie's owner is Karen White of Denton, Texas who lives at the Good Samaritan Village in a twin home for independent living.
