Ella & Lucy, Citizens Care & Rehabilitation Center

Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, a 170-bed skilled nursing facility owned & operated by Frederick County (MD) Government, has had two “ambassadogs” since summer of 2008. Ella, a 4 year old rescued Greyhound owned by the administrator, Nicole Bohrer-Banzohoff, LNHA, and Lucy, a one year old Cocker Spaniel/Dachshund mix owned by Marketing Director Margie Weaver, became fast friends.

Both love to visit with residents, often sensing when someone needs a puppy kiss or a hug. Our residents light up when Lucy and Ella bound down the hallway toward a specific office where they know they can always find a treat, or when they race around our courtyard, Ella’s sleek Greyhound physique much outpacing Lucy’s stout little wiener dog legs! When Nicole or Margie arrive at work, they are no longer greeted by name; instead, everyone greets the dogs first, then gives a cursory hello to the humans. It is evident that Lucy and Ella’s presence at Citizens has made a world of difference to the home-like atmosphere of the facility. We love our four-legged friends at Citizens Care & Rehabilitation Center!
