Domino, Twin Lakes Community Memory Care

Twin Lakes Memory Care in Burlington, North Carolina opened in July 2008, to serve 32 cognitively-impaired residents and 12 adult day participants each day. We spent years planning the perfect building, with 2 very comfortable households joined by a ‘Town Center’ with chapel, soda shop, cinema, beauty shop, and reading nook/office. Carefully selected and trained staff provide wonderful, loving care and become part of the residents’ family, engaging in activities, reminiscing, and normal acts of life. But the single most important ingredient in this home is Domino, our resident Springer Spaniel.

Domino was a rescue dog – found on the side of the road and brought to the facility’s administrator. At first, he was a little skittish – especially around men. It was evident that he had been abused in his early life. But with lots of love by staff and residents alike, Domino soon felt comfortable in his new home and warmed up to the residents. He provides a listening ear and lots of love to residents who may have lost the ability to easily communicate with words. He shares in the fun as we create moments of joy for our residents. He supervises the household from the care center when residents are having meals and he’s forced to stay out of the dining area.

Domino has played a significant role in the well-being of one resident in particular. This resident was very anxious and agitated when she first moved to Memory Care, pacing nervously around the perimeter of the building and checking each door, asking staff repeatedly “How can I get out of here?” This same resident had loved dogs all her life, and we noticed that her demeanor totally changed when a dog was in the room. Within three weeks of being in the new environment with Domino by her side, she relaxed to the point that she can sit on the back porch and enjoy a cool breeze, participate in activities, and enjoy long conversations with her family and friends.

Domino has truly been a caring canine for Memory Care!
