Scarlet, Piqua Manor

Scarlet is a six year old Golden Retriever and has been an active member of the Piqua Manor team since she was a puppy.

Scarlet was born to be a therapy dog as evidenced by her innate understanding of what residents need from her. For example, one day a resident fell and broke her hip. The resident had dementia and was calling out in agony while lying on the floor. Scarlet, at this time was not even a year old, gently laid down next to her on the floor and rested her head on the resident’s chest. Immediately the resident calmed down and started patting Scarlet’s head and talking to her. Scarlet stayed with her until the paramedics came and transported her to the hospital. Scarlet was able to do, what trained staff could not, and that was to calm this anxious, confused and scared resident.

Scarlet’s nature has calmed many dementia residents at Piqua Manor including witnessed behavior concerns disappearing in the presence of Scarlet, even if for only a few moments. One staff member witnessed an Alzheimer’s resident, who’s only known form of communication is to rip up any paper she can get a hold of.  The resident started petting Scarlet and began talking to the staff member in full sentences. Piqua Manor’s therapists also have watched residents that normally exhibit depressed moods lighten up with a smile when Scarlet is in the care community visiting. Scarlet has even helped the short-term therapy residents focus on her playfulness so that they forget for a moment about their pain.

All of the residents at Piqua Manor love to see animals in the building, however, it takes a very special animal to be able to calm and soothe a resident who is confused, or motivate them to return home. Scarlet is one of the most patient and tolerant staff members at Piqua Manor as well as widely loved by all who come into contact with her. Scarlet has made such an impact in her short six years at Piqua Manor that it would be wonderful to see other long term care communities utilize a therapy companion similar to Scarlet.
