Lewis, Amarillo VA Community Living Center

Lewis is a “mutt with a mission” at the Amarillo, Texas VA Community Living Center (CLC). He has lived in the CLC for a year and a half and has brought joy and smiles to residents, staff, and visitors. Lewis is the first resident dog at the Amarillo VA CLC. He was donated by a VA employee’s sister in memory of their father, a WWII veteran named Lewis who had recently passed away. He is a Yorkie/Chihuahua mix.

Lewis meets and greets anyone coming into the CLC unit and has given comfort in times of sorrow as he did when he came upon grieving family members of a veteran resident who had just passed away. He climbed into the lap of one family member and cuddled with her, sensing that she was sad. The family responded with petting and cuddling him for a period of time. They were comforted by this show of affection. Lewis spends time at the nurse’s station either napping on his bed underneath the counter or sitting in one of the chairs to see who is coming and going. He is always ready to take and give attention to anyone in the CLC. Lewis “makes rounds” with the evening and night shift staff to check on everyone. He has been a wonderful addition to the Amarillo VA CLC family.
