Demand Grows for Caring Canines Calendar PDF Print E-mail

Vol XLI, Dec '09
At the end of November the Foundation has received well over 400 orders for Caring Canines calendars, the proceeds of which will benefit the Foundation and long term care research. The calendar features 60 dogs that visit or live or work in nursing homes across the country. The beautiful full-color photos show a variety of breeds and sizes of dogs, many with their elderly human companions.

Also included are the inspirational and moving stories of the dogs, such as this one:

As the first resident dog at the Amarillo VA Community Living Center in Texas, Lewis is a “mutt with a mission.” Donated by a VA employee’s sister in memory of their recently departed father, a World War II veteran, Lewis meets and greets anyone coming into the unit and offers comfort in times of sorrow to grieving family members. The Yorkie-Chihuahua mix may be small in stature, but he walks tall.

AMDA Foundation Research Network member Chris Patterson, MD, CMD, whose dog, Larry, is featured in the calendar, ordered 30 copies. “I plan to give them as gifts to family members, as well as people at my nursing homes. Larry has touched the hearts of many….I think those who know Larry will enjoy seeing him in this calendar; and those who don’t know him hopefully will appreciate seeing him and reading his story.”
