Vol XLII, May '10 In keeping with AMDA Foundation protocol, Dr. Handler's proposal was reviewed by members of the Foundation Scientific Council. Members of this council agreed that the research that Drs. Handler and Nace proposed was important, as adverse drug events are a significant cause or morbidity and mortality in nursing homes and current methods of detection and communication about these events remain inadequate. The Foundation provided the Pittsburgh team with a location next to the AMDA Foundation booth from which Dr. Handler and his team distributed the survey. AMDA members received an AMDA clinical practice guideline in exchange for completing the survey. The survey netted an incredible 70% response rate among physicians attending the meeting. The Foundation welcomed the additional traffic to the booth where contributions to the Wall of Caring exceeded the previous year’s total. Of course, all contributions to the Wall of Caring went to support the Futures Class of 2010, thus bringing this story full circle: from Dr. Handler's introduction to AMDA as a Futures Program alumnus (class of 2002) to his status as a researcher and an enthusiastic supporter of the Foundation. He has demonstrated the effectiveness of partnerships between researchers and the AMDA Foundation. The Foundation's Scientific Council will be considering potential ways to expand survey opportunities for Long Term Care Medicine 2011 in Tampa and welcomes suggestions (send ideas/comments to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). |
