Taking your dog with you when you visit nursing facilities can be very satisfying for residents and staff alike. However, before packing your pup’s briefcase, consider the following:
  • Check with the facility about its rules/requirements for visiting pets
  • Determine when your pet will visit—sporadically or set hours
  • Determine if you need additional liability or other insurance coverage to take your pet to work
  • Make sure your pet has the right temperament, activity/energy level, socialization, and obedience training for nursing home visits
  • Be prepared to bathe/groom your pet as necessary prior to visits
  • Make sure your pet gets along with any other animals it is likely to encounter at the facility
  • Be sensitive to the fact that not everyone likes pets and that you will have to watch for body language and other cues and keep your pet away from people who don’t like animals or are fearful.
