Stop by the AMDA Foundation booth after the Long Term Care Medicine—2012 opening general session and meet Mike, a long-term care therapy dog and companion of AMDA member David Smith, MD, CMD. Mike will help spotlight the Foundation’s 2012 Caring Canines calendar and the important work the dogs it features do every day.

The six-year-old yellow lab often accompanies Dr. Smith to his facilities. He said, “I have him trained so that if I see someone across the hall or day room who seems to be down in the mouth, I will line Mike up and say ‘go love ‘em up;’ and he will go over and interact with the person.” As many of Dr. Smith’s elderly patients were hunters and outdoorsmen, Mike is a happy reminder of pleasant memories and good times.
